The northern town of Koynare is preparing to host two major cross-country events on the 2026 calendar, the Bulgarian Athletics Federation (BAF) said in a social media post on Friday.
The town will host the National Championships on October 24, followed by the Balkan Cross Country Championships on November 14.
Ahead of the events, a BAF delegation visited Koynare for a working meeting with local authorities to discuss preparations. BAF Secretary General Iliyan Pishchikov inspected the course, existing infrastructure and conditions for holding the championships.
The meeting was attended by Cherven Bryag Mayor Atanas Atanasov, Koynare Mayor Denislav Dinov and longtime athletics coach and sports organizer Danail Nenkov, who has contributed significantly to the development of athletics in the region.
Discussions focused on course preparations, security measures, the competition programme and logistics. Repair work is currently underway on the course and adjacent sports facilities to improve conditions for competitors and ensure the successful staging of both championships.
The Balkan Championships are expected to attract considerable international interest, with 15 teams anticipated to participate. Bulgaria will field a full team, and the programme will include events across different age categories.
Hosting the two championships is an opportunity to promote athletics and establish Koynare as a venue for major sporting events.
