Kozloduy Units 5, 6 to Operate if Safety Is Confirmed, Regulator Says

Units 5 and 6 of the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant will continue operating as long as their safety can be confirmed, Nuclear Regulatory Agency (NRA) Chairman Tsanko Bachiyski told reporters on Friday. The lifetime extension programme showed that Unit 5 could operate until 2049 and Unit 6 until 2051, given the current condition of the units and provided the necessary measures set out in the project get implemented. These are not necessarily the final operating deadlines, Bachiyski added.
The actual deadlines will depend on the condition of the units, which is assessed through periodic safety reviews in accordance with international standards. The reviews are conducted every 10 years, with licence holders required to demonstrate the safety of the facilities, the NRA Chairman said. At the agency’s discretion, the periodic review may also be conducted at shorter intervals.
Bachiyski said the results of the 10-year safety review of Unit 5 are expected by the end of 2026, while the review of Unit 6 is due in a year.
The expert reported that if any safety deficiencies are identified, the NRA can shorten the operating period and suggest measures, which can include equipment replacement and reviews addressing specific aspects of safety. One review that is underway examines how operating conditions, particularly shutdowns, affect the service life of equipment. All factors assessed must confirm a level of safety that can be maintained over the following years.
