So much for sticking it out.
Veteran 60 Minutes correspondent Lesley Stahl has allegedly already considered quitting the iconic news program after a round of heated edits from Bari Weiss and other top brass on her most recent segment examining extremist Israeli settlers in the West Bank.
Oliver Darcy of Status reported Stahl’s segment on settlers included “very hands-on” editing from Weiss and her deputy, Charles Forelle:
At first, Stahl’s West Bank piece seemed like it could make air rather smoothly, I’m told. The veteran correspondent had received some light notes, but nothing out of the ordinary. It was mid-week, and everything appeared to be on track for the report to air Sunday evening as planned.
Then Weiss and her deputy, managing editor Charles Forelle, entered the picture.
I’m told Weiss and Forelle participated in screenings late last week and provided a plethora of feedback. Weiss became “very, very hands-on,” as one person familiar with the matter told Status. The precise nature of her objections remains unclear, but I’m told they were not confined to a particular factual assertion or isolated element of the report. Rather, her concerns were much broader, setting the stage for what spiraled into a highly contentious editorial process.
I’m also told that in one conversation, Forelle suggested tabling the story for a later date, given that it was late in the week, and that delaying it would give leadership more time to work through their feedback with her. But I’m told Stahl strongly objected, contending that with network leadership present in the meeting, they should just work through the various points of feedback then.
It’s unclear what Weiss and Forelle wanted to change about the piece, but the rocky editing process left Stahl so frustrated, according to Darcy, that Stahl “privately floated” the idea of quitting the program, where she’s worked since 1991.
CBS blasted the report.
“This is a ludicrous, twisted narrative. All 60 Minutes pieces go through a famously rigorous editorial process – which includes edits from editors. This piece received far fewer edits than most,” a spokesman told Mediaite.
The issue had as much to do with timing as anything else, a source familiar with the matter told Mediaite, pointing out the segment wasn’t presented to 60 Minutes brass for editing until Thursday afternoon.
“Between Thursday afternoon and Sunday night there was a tight window to refine” the segment, the source contended.
Internal conflicts at 60 Minutes have been making headlines since Weiss was installed as editor in chief of CBS News, with longtime correspondent Scott Pelley infamously blowing up at Weiss and other top brass and declaring she was “murdering” the program.
The source pointed out that Weiss is not a newbie any more, with more than a year at the network now under her belt.
She and Forelle, a Pulitzer Prize winner, “are not neophytes,” the source said. “They have really strong credentials in their own right.”
But critics have shredded Weiss’ lack of television news experience and her apparently pro-MAGA positions.
Weiss infamously pulled a segment on the deportation of Venezuelan immigrants to El Salvador’s high-security CECOT prison by correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi shortly before it was to air, allegedly because it lacked a substantive response from the Trump administration — which Alfonsi pushed back on.
Alfonsi, who quit the program in May, had responded the administration’s lack of response to her repeated inquiries was a statement in and of itself.
