Take a seat, Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White.
Caitlin Jenner joked during a Tuesday interview on the Planet Tyrus podcast she should be the one declaring for the WNBA draft, because she is a “real” trans person, which she said is what she told Freedom during one of their recent phone calls.
“Enes and I have talked quite a few times, and I even told him one time, ‘Enes’ — this is a couple of weeks ago — ‘Enes, I’m like a real trans person. Maybe I should sign up for the 2027 WNBA draft,’” Jenner said while chuckling a bit.
Tyrus — a staple on Fox News’ Gutfeld! — loved the idea.
“I think you could average a double double,” he said.
Jenner then pointed out the then-Kansas City Kings drafted her in 1977, one year after she won the gold medal in the men’s decathlon and decades before she transitioned, in what was mostly just a publicity stunt.
Tyrus added he always respected how the 76-year-old Jenner went about her much-publicized 2015 transition, because “you weren’t pushing who you were onto anyone else.”
Their conversation about the WNBA comes after Freedom and White — two former NBA players — declared in August they were going to enter the next WNBA draft in protest of the league’s approach to trans issues.
Both Freedom and White have made the media rounds lately talking about their plans, and Freedom even got booted from a recent game after he started jawing with Chicago Sky player Natasha Cloud. Cloud posted after the game that she got heated at Kanter because she wanted to show “every trans kid/person, You are apart [sic] of MY community & tribe.”
All of this followed Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham being thrust into a media frenzy over the last two months, after she told ESPN she did not believe girls and women should play against biological boys and men who have transitioned.
Here is the comment which sparked the whole saga:
“I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I’m like, ‘I never once said that,’” [Cunningham] says. “I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”
Cunningham’s remark was both praised and condemned, with some fans rallying in support of her and making her Adidas sneakers a best seller. Others have criticized her for it, including one opposing coach who took a not-so-subtle shot at Cunningham by wearing a shirt declaring “Trans Kids Belong.”
The ordeal seemed to hit a new level — or low, more accurately — last month when Cunningham was clobbered with a clothesline smack to the head in a nationally broadcast game. The vicious hit did not appear to hurt her vocal chords too much, though, because Cunningham was seen the following week jumping on a bar top and belting out a Toby Keith country tune.
Tyrus told Jenner he thinks Freedom has pressed the issue a bit too hard, but he also said the WNBA has whiffed in its response.
“All the WNBA had to say was, ‘You can’t play in our league because you’re a man. This is a women’s league.’ That’s it, it’s over. News cycle’s done,” Tyrus said.
Jenner agreed, before adding, “But maybe they don’t want the news cycle done.”
