Lower Voter Turnout Calls Into Question President’s Legitimacy, Presidential Candidate Hristanov Says 2026

Low voter turnout calls the legitimacy of the president into question, presidential candidate Ivan Hristanov told journalists in Burgas. He was accompanied by vice-presidential candidate Stoyanka Cherkezova.
Hristanov called on the media to provide candidates with greater opportunities to present their views during the remaining days of the campaign. According to him, portraying the election as a foregone conclusion could discourage citizens from voting.
He said that opinion polls he had access to from the past three months showed Iliana Iotova in the lead, while his presidential ticket and that of Andrey Gurov were competing for a place in the runoff. Hristanov stated that he and Cherkezova could unite the patriotic and anti-corruption vote.
Regarding the Radev cabinet, Hristanov recalled that he had called for its resignation on Monday.
Bulgaria is purchasing missile systems at a price of EUR 185 million per unit, compared with EUR 107 million per unit for Switzerland, Hristanov said. According to him, the country is allocating an additional EUR 400 million for these systems while refusing to join the European Union’s common anti-drone shield.
He also highlighted the state of biosecurity as another concern, arguing that it could lead to further increases in meat prices. He said that the government’s repeated compromises on national security constituted the third reason for his call for the resignation of the Radev cabinet.
Following the press briefing, Hristanov and Cherkezova met with members of the public.
