Undaunted by a recent flurry of attacks against her by President Donald Trump, New York Times correspondent Maggie Haberman has come out with a blockbuster front-page article about how the president is “wielding power to stifle speech” in America.
In a lengthy A1 Sunday feature, Haberman and colleague Jim Rutenberg catalogued various instances of the Trump administration’s efforts to carry out what they called “a sweeping campaign to control speech in America.”
“Driven by personal pique, fury over leaks and a determination to shape the political narrative to his advantage, Mr. Trump is deploying the might of the federal government and filing personal lawsuits — targeting not just journalists and liberal critics, but also comedians and talk show hosts, and the corporate entities behind them,” Haberman and Rutenberg wrote.
Among the major revelations in the piece was that the president’s feud with the Associated Press ratcheted up after the AP refused to give up the rights to the photo of Trump raising his fist in the air after the 2024 assassination attempt against him in Butler, PA.
The article chronicled the various legal battles between the administration and media outlets — including the subpoenas issued to Times reporters who had investigated security issues with the new Qatari-gifter Air Force One — subpoenas which were later withdrawn after it appeared the DOJ was about to lose a court battle over them. Haberman and Rutenberg also cited the paper’s ongoing battle with the Pentagon over their new press restrictions — which remain in place for the moment amid pending litigation.
Haberman, though, did not mention Trump’s recent personal attacks on her — which ramped up following the release of bestseller “Regime Change” (co-written with Jonathan Swan). The book contained numerous unflattering revelations about the president and his allies, and Trump lashed out following its publication.
“Based on a very quick and boring briefing concerning the Magot Hagerman book about me, it is mostly made up, Fake News, largely fiction, as have been most of the things she has written about me for so many years,” Trump wrote in a June 28 Truth Social post. “She is a third rate writer and intellect, who has made a first rate income because of your favorite President, ME. She was wrong about me on the Elections, although she knew I was going to win, BIG! She was wrong about me on the Russia, Russia, Russia Hoax, and she was wrong about me on just about everything else. But she continues to spew out garbage, and people continue to buy it.”
White House Communications Director Steven Cheung told the Times, “biased reporting from the media is a disservice to the American people.” Cheung also claimed Trump has provided “unprecedented access,” to the media, adding, “We utilize every tool available to ensure that accurate reporting is provided to the public and the stain of those who knowingly peddle false information is held accountable.”
