At least eight Marines were injured earlier this month when they were hit with an Iranian cruise missile in the Strait of Hormuz, an attack that the Pentagon had not previously disclosed, NBC News reported on Sunday night.

The Sept. 14 assault on a ship in the strait left seven enlisted Marines and an officer injured, according to NBC News, citing three U.S. officials.

The report noted that the troops were not on a U.S. Navy ship at the time of the strike, and it’s not known what kind of ship it was, nor the extent of the injuries for the service members, who eventually returned to duty.

“The Defense Department did not disclose any Sept. 14 attacks against U.S. forces in the region,” the report went on. “The Iranian attack and details of the eight Marines’ injuries have not previously been reported.”

When asked for comment on the attack, a spokesperson for the Pentagon referred Mediaite to Central Command. A message left with CENTCOM was not immediately returned.

CENTCOM posted several videos and photos to social media on September 14-15, but no mention of an Iranian strike.

On Monday, CENTCOM posted a fact check about Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps claiming the regime’s “navy” has control of the Strait of Hormuz.

“FACT: Iran has no navy because American forces sank it. And Iran does not control the Strait of Hormuz as evidenced by the thousands of ships that have passed through freely along with more than 1 billion barrels of oil just over the past few months.”

The NBC report comes days after Iran pitched a plan to open the strait and resume talks about its nuclear program, a proposal that Trump said he was rejecting because “we’re winning tremendously.”
