Progressive Michigan U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed took a swipe at CNN during a rally over the weekend, saying that appearing on the network recently has felt like a “non-consensual colonoscopy.”
“Now, you know, I go on CNN every once in a while, and I get a non-consensual colonoscopy. And then all they ever ask me about is another country,” El Sayed said to a crowd of supporters in Grand Rapids, adding:
And then they’re like, “All he’s ever talking about is another country?” No! I just want everybody to understand that there’s an opportunity cost to the money being sent over there, and that is what we could have over here.
The jab was quickly clipped and went viral on social media with even the RNC’s research account sharing it.
El Sayed has tussled with CNN anchors in his recent interviews, including with Jake Tapper on Sunday. Tapper asked El Sayed about a recording from earlier in the summer in which El Sayed warned “there are a lot of people in Dearborn who are sad” the Ayatollah had been killed by an Israeli airstrike.
“I thought that quote was interesting, because the ayatollah has killed tens of thousands of innocent Iranians, not to mention the proxies that Iran has funded that have killed innocent civilians all over the Middle East,” Tapper said. “Why were you worried about offending people who support the ayatollah?”
“Jake, on a day where we’re mourning the loss of two more service members in a war we never should have fought, I think all of us should step back and ask in Michigan — frankly everyone in America — that this president, backed by a prime minister of a foreign government, took us to a war we had no business fighting in,” El Sayed replied.
“So yeah, I didn’t want to comment on it then, because it’s a ridiculous pretext. And now you’re asking about the ayatollah, who’s dead, by the way, and you’re not asking me about the service members who died,” he added.
