Balgarianovinite.com Miglena Temelkova has been re-elected for a second term as Chair of the Council of Rectors of Higher Education Institutions in the Republic of Bulgaria. The decision was made at a General Reporting and Election Assembly of the Council of Rectors, held in Sofia on Thursday.
Temelkova, who serves as Rector of the University of Telecommunications and Post in Sofia, was proposed by 14 universities for re-election to the top position at the Council of Rectors. The other candidate, National Sports Academy Rector Krasimir Petkov, was nominated by five higher education institutions. The Council vote was 29 to 18 in Temelkova’s favour.
Temelkova told journalists that in her new term she will not divide the universities by types and categories, state vs private, large vs small, civilian vs military, or broad-profile vs specialized. She noted that for almost two years now, calls have been issued to reform the funding model, which is blamed for high tuition fees for fee-paying students. Another priority for her has been to rethink the status of rectors and of the Council of Rectors.
The Council of Rectors of Higher Education Institutions brings together the leaderships of all Bulgarian universities with different areas of study and scientific activity. Every two years, through direct secret ballot, the Council elects its chair, who may hold the position for no more than two consecutive terms.
