Balgarianovinite.com A military Cougar helicopter joined a rescue operation after a female tourist fell on a steep trail while descending from Malyovitsa Peak in the Rila Mountain (Southwest Bulgaria), the Mountain Rescue Service (MRS) of the Bulgarian Red Cross told BTA on Saturday.
The woman sustained a traumatic brain injury, including a skull-base fracture. The people who were with her did everything possible to immobilise her, the rescue service said. She later succumbed to her injuries.
The tourists called the emergency number 112, and a medical helicopter with a crew was dispatched. Due to the terrain, the air ambulance was unable to reach a point close to the site and had to remain at a distance that would have required a two-hour walk to reach the location.
“After we learned that the medical helicopter could not land due to low fuel, its weight, the temperature and the conditions in the mountains, we turned to the military, and a Cougar helicopter was dispatched,” the MRS said. A member of the Mountain Rescue Service was also on board.
The Defence Ministry confirmed to BTA that the military Cougar helicopter had joined the rescue operation, taking off at 4:47 p.m.
The MRS said the military helicopter managed to land near the site of the incident. The group of tourists accompanying the woman included a medical professional, who established that she had no vital signs. The woman was transported to Mecha Polyana, where forensic medical specialists are expected to arrive and officially establish the tourist’s death, the rescue service said.
