Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) has claimed that a 60 Minutes investigation into Jeffrey Epstein’s banking relationships, for which he was interviewed, never aired following the exit of veteran correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi as part of the show’s staffing upheaval.
The Democratic senator said in a new report that he sat down for an interview with Alfonsi in March as part of a CBS 60 Minutes investigation examining how major financial institutions handled Epstein’s accounts and suspicious transactions.
The segment, however, never made it to broadcast, he says, when Alfonsi left CBS News two months later.
Speaking to Bloomberg about the new revelations, a CBS spokesperson confirmed that Wyden’s interview took place but said the story was not completed before the program’s season ended in May.
The network declined to say whether the segment would be revisited when the show returns, according to Bloomberg.
Alfonsi departed the network while publicly criticizing its leadership and, particularly, editor-in-chief Bari Weiss over her decision to stall the release of a different report, examining conditions faced by Venezuelan migrants deported by the Trump administration to El Salvador’s notorious CECOT prison.
At the time, Alfonsi privately blasted that move as “political” in an email to colleagues, while Weiss insisted the piece “was not ready” and requested additional reporting, including an interview with Trump adviser Stephen Miller. The segment later aired largely intact with added comments from the administration.
Mention of Wyden’s interview surfaced Monday in the senator’s release of a sweeping Senate report alleging that several of the country’s largest banks of having “been willing to turn a blind eye” to Epstein’s financial activity and calling for stronger enforcement against institutions that ignore suspicious transactions.
Wyden’s investigation alleges Deutsche Bank AG failed to promptly report more than $250 million in suspicious Epstein-related transactions. It also found that Bank of America reported roughly $170 million in transactions linked to billionaire Leon Black, including payments that investigators said appeared to have “no apparent economic, business or lawful purpose.”
Black has maintained the payments were for legitimate tax and estate-planning advice and has denied any knowledge of Epstein’s criminal conduct. His attorney, Susan Estrich, called the report’s conclusions “outrageous and false,” citing a 2021 Apollo-commissioned investigation that found no evidence connecting Black to Epstein’s crimes.
The report also highlights clashes between Wyden and the Trump administration over access to Treasury records. After Trump returned to office, Wyden sought continued access to suspicious activity reports tied to Epstein’s finances, but Treasury rejected three requests.
Wyden also accuses Deutsche Bank, Bank of America and JPMorgan Chase of failing to fully cooperate with his investigation and faults Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) for allegedly blocking legislation that would have required Treasury to release the records.
