In an open letter to Prime Minister Rumen Radev and Minister of Economy and Industry Alexander Poulev, the Association for Modern Trade (AMT) calls for an urgent meeting with the Prime Minister and representatives of relevant ministries to discuss joint actions to ensure food security, the continuity of supply chains and the stability of the domestic market in the face of heightened geopolitical risk.
Against the backdrop of the complicated geopolitical situation in the Black Sea region, the AMT emphasizes that in the face of increased national security risk, citizens must be able to rely on a stable economic environment and secure supplies of basic goods.
“Modern trade in Bulgaria should be considered critical infrastructure. Food sovereignty and the continuity of supply chains are fundamental elements of national security,” the Association, which represents leading wholesale retailers, said.
In the letter, the organization sharply criticizes the Commission for Consumer Protection (CCP), accusing the institution of manipulative interpretation of economic and statistical data and actions that undermine public trust in the trade sector.
The Association believes that such institutional behaviour creates additional tension at a time when the government is trying to limit the impact of external risks on the economy. According to the organization, the weakening of trust in modern trade can benefit the grey economy and speculative practices.
The AMT called on the executive branch and business to work together to guarantee the economic security of citizens.
“We call for a statesmanlike approach and an end to the unjustified institutional aggression that replaces the real problems with the structural deficit in agriculture with populist campaigns,” the letter also states.
