A moratorium on military hostilities in the Black Sea and an agreement among its six coastal countries would help ensure safe shipping, Presidential Candidate Iliana Iotova said on Friday.
She described a moratorium on all military hostilities, alongside consultations and an agreement among Bulgaria, Romania, Turkiye, Georgia, Ukraine and Russia, as the first realistic step towards protecting the Black Sea.
“Our greatest goal, and the focus of all our actions at every level and across all institutions, must be the security of the Black Sea,” Iotova said, adding that this could be achieved through active diplomacy.
“I am not talking only about efforts to secure peace, including through pressure on the European stage. Negotiations must begin as soon as possible: peace through negotiations, not through force and war,” she added.
She noted the response to her United Nations General Assembly address, including the French president’s reaction. In the address, she proposed a moratorium on drone attacks in the Black Sea.
“You can see that a similar message has even come from India, because they have a very clear understanding of the famine that will ensue if these corridors are disrupted. A huge proportion of the grain exported from Russia and Ukraine in particular passes through the Black Sea, supplying other continents,” Iotova said.
She added that renewed efforts to hold talks between Ukraine, the United States and Russia were beginning on Friday, but said Europe must also put forward its own proposal for ending the war and achieving peace in Ukraine.
Iotova and Vice-Presidential Candidate Kiril Valchev visited Kardzhali for a campaign meeting.
