Balgarianovinite.com More than 30 people have been detained in a police operation targeting an organized crime group involved in extortion, pimping and racketeering, Sofia Police Director Chief Commissioner Lyubomir Nikolov said at a briefing on Sunday.
Nikolov, who was earlier named acting Secretary General of the Interior Ministry, said the operation was carried out in Sofia’s Botunets neighbourhood and other parts of the capital, as well as at locations outside Sofia.
The detainees are members of the criminal underworld, mainly from the so-called Kalashnitsite group, he said. A total of 36 people have been arrested so far through the joint efforts of the General Directorate for Combating Organized Crime (GDBOP), the Sofia Directorate of Interior and the Specialized Police Forces Directorate, with further arrests expected.
Police have identified multiple addresses that are currently being searched, with investigators finding evidence linked to the group’s activities, Nikolov said.
He added that six pre-trial proceedings have already been opened by the Sofia City Prosecution Office and district prosecutors. The main charges expected to be brought against the detainees relate to extortion, pimping and racketeering.
According to Nikolov, officers have discovered weapons at some of the searched locations, as well as lists of women believed to have been engaged in prostitution on behalf of specific individuals. Further details will be released at a later stage.
Some of the suspects are related to one another, he said, adding that most of those detained have previous criminal records.
Nikolov called on citizens to report criminal activity and disturbances in their neighbourhoods without delay.
“We are aware that similar groups engaged in various forms of criminal activity operate not only in Sofia but in other parts of the country as well,” he said.
“The Interior Ministry will be uncompromising. Their time is coming to an end,” Nikolov added.
