Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) leader Delyan Peevski said in a Facebook post: “Every word linking me to guardrail companies is a lie.”
Earlier on Wednesday, Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev sent a report to the National Revenue Agency (NRA) requesting a check of available data on significant expenses incurred by Peevski.
On September 18, the Interior Minister said companies involved in the supply of guardrails diverted funds to a shell company, which in turn paid for private flights taken by Delyan Peevski. Later that day, the MRF leader dismissed the claims as fabrications.
Referring to the requested NRA check, Peevski commented: “I have clearly stated that I have no concerns about checks and stand by every word I have said on the matter.” He also said he hoped the check would be completed within the shortest possible statutory timeframe and publish the results.
“Neither I nor my family have ever, under any circumstances, participated in public procurement procedures! Neither I nor my family have anything to do with these guardrail companies, whether in connection with flights or anything else – these are lies! I stress – lies!” the post said.
“I remind you that for more than 15 years I have been the political leader most scrutinized by all possible institutions and agencies, including during the caretaker governments appointed by [then President] Rumen Radev,” Peevski said.
“I commend the minister’s actions, but I want Ivan Demerdzhiev to show the same proletarian zeal in investigating the numerous publicly available reports and data on corruption in the highest echelons of Progressive Bulgaria,” the post said.
“Unless, for him, the Interior Ministry is merely a cudgel with which he attacks his party’s opponents. And everything that has happened so far proves this,” the MRF leader commented.
“This is probably why deafening silence surrounds the publicly disclosed information about 411 properties acquired by Ivan Demerdzhiev and his family. But we will not stop bringing the actions of this minister to light and will continue to provide institutions and the public with data about his unusual accumulation of wealth,” he added.
In late August, Demerdzhiev referred Peevski to the National Audit Office over suspected discrepancies between his publicly declared assets and income as a public office holder and his actual lifestyle.
