MRF Slams Planned Closure of Secret Police Files Committee 2026

Balgarianovinite.com “The Movement for Rights and Freedom (MRF) strongly condemns the Government’s intention to quietly shut down the communist-era secret police files committee [officially the Committee for Disclosing the Documents and Announcing Affiliation of Bulgarian Citizens to State Security and to the Intelligence Services of the Bulgarian National Army],” MRF MP Stanislav Anastasov said in a declaration, addressing Parliament on Friday.
“These actions constitute an anti-democratic attempt to erase the memory about events and processes from the dark days of the communist regime, as well as about the people involved in them,” the MP said.
In a Facebook post on Thursday, MRF Floor Leader Delyan Peevski described the Government’s intention to close on the communist-era secret police files committee as “a scandalous attempt to erase the memory about events and processes from the dark times of the communist regime, as well as about the people involved in them”.
“This will be yet another attempt from the successors to senior officers of State Security to obliterate all evidence and monuments that bear witness to their crimes against fellow citizens, regardless of their ethnic or religious identity. We at the MRF hope that this is an ill-considered mistake that will be corrected swiftly, as befits Bulgaria as a NATO and EU member,” Anastasov added.
“This is a sensitive subject as far as we at the MRF are concerned, as the non-governmental organization Sofia Platform is currently continuing its attempts to wipe out the authentic look of Site Two on the Danube island of Persin – the former Belene forced labour camp, and to build a bogus museum. Andrey Gurov’s caretaker cabinet actively backed all actions of Sofia Platform by endorsing long-expired building permits. That is why we are entering a series of questions on the legitimacy of the steps taken by the organization and by Belene Municipality,” the MP said.
Anastasov said that while for 36 years the democratic community had failed to expose the links held over from the secret services of the communist regime, the MRF is doing so within its own ranks. “Not a single State Security agent, nor a candidate for Parliament with such links, is part of the MRF. Our party was born out of the pain caused by the greatest crime of the communist regime, and we owe the truth to the few who survived that repressive system,” he further specified.
He was apparently referring to an internationally condemned campaign conducted by Bulgaria’s communist regime in late 1984 and early 1985 to assimilate the local Muslim minority by forcing its over one million members to adopt Slavic names, limit their religious activity, and refrain from speaking Turkish in public.
“We call for a broad public debate on the future of the secret police files committee and a discussion of the proposal by the Union of the Repressed by Communism to establish a Museum of Totalitarian Regimes and an Institute for National Memory, which would complement the work of the files committee,” the MP said.
“Immediately withdraw the proposal to close the files committee, because we at the MRF will continue to work to preserve memory, protect the rights of those who suffered repression, and ensure they have a dignified place in Bulgaria’s democratic history,” Anastasov insisted.
According to the 2026 state budget bill published on the Finance Ministry’s website, a motion for legislative amendments must be drafted by September 15 for closing down the communist-era secret police files committee and for transferring its activities to the Archives State Agency.
In a Facebook post on Thursday, MRF Floor Leader Delyan Peevski described the Government’s intention to close on the communist-era secret police files committee as “a scandalous attempt to delete the memory about events and processes from the dark times of the communist regime as well as about those who participated in them”.
