Balgarianovinite.com Artists from several musical groups played and sang together with the audience at the Damascena Ethnographic Complex in Skobelevo on Saturday evening, opening the Kamdzhalov Festival in the Valley of Roses. The event marked the second edition of the interdisciplinary festival, which, according to conductor and music director Yordan Kamdzhalov, represents a meeting between the fragrance of roses and that of the future.
“The festival’s message is that we can be together through the universal language of music and that this beauty obliges us to live differently, that we can lead more meaningful lives and create the best possible future for the generations to come,” Kamdzhalov told BTA.
He said the festival promotes meaning, beauty, togetherness, aesthetics, unity, harmony and mutual understanding. “The message is also that we can enjoy a fundamentally different quality of life when we think and feel together,” he added, noting that the children on stage that evening were “a complete embodiment of these messages”.
The opening day’s programme, held under the theme “The Fragrance of the Future”, began with a discussion on medical and health issues and continued with a concert at the local amphitheatre. The concert opened with performances by the Smiling Stars Children’s Choir from a school in Sofia, conducted by Maya Vasileva-Chetrokova. The choir surprised the audience with the popular song “A Bulgarian Rose”. The children also performed Italian music and Bulgarian hits, with the audience joining them in singing “Tell Me, Little White Cloud”.
The evening continued with performances by the Idna Vocal Trio, who presented songs from different ethnographic regions of Bulgaria. They opened with “Three Little Bells”, the song with which they made their stage debut a year ago at the Damascena complex during the inaugural edition of the Kamdzhalov Festival in the Valley of Roses.
The audience took an active part in the concert, singing together with the Idna Trio and members of a choir founded by Kamdzhalov, called Music Laboratory for the Human Self. The programme included performances of the patriotic songs “You Are Beautiful, My Forest” and “Where Are You, My Faithful People’s Love”.
The Yakubov Brothers and the Apostolov Sisters also appeared on stage. Following a joint performance by the audience and participants of Ivan Vazov’s “Where Is Bulgaria”, everyone bowed together in tribute to Bulgaria and Bulgarian talent.
The Kamdzhalov Festival in the Valley of Roses continues on Sunday with a workshop led by the conductor, and the concert “Mystery and Freedom”, conducted by the maestro, who promised the audience an unforgettable experience. The concert will feature special guest singer Sofi Marinova, alongside Switzerland’s The Eastern Quartet, the Genesis Orchestra, and the choir and ensemble of the Music Laboratory for the Human Self.
