National Academy of Art at 130: LIK Issue Highlights a Legacy of Cultural Investment 2026

Balgarianovinite.com The February issue of LIK magazine, dedicated to the 130th anniversary of the National Academy of Art, was presented at the Academia Gallery as both a celebration of artistic tradition and a call to safeguard Bulgaria’s cultural future.
At the event, Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) Director General Kiril Valchev described the anniversary edition as a reminder that national development requires investment in the spiritual and cultural life of the country. He recalled the historical role of Prince Ferdinand in founding the State Drawing School in 1896, today’s National Academy of Art, and highlighted the monarch’s broader contributions to Bulgarian culture and education. Valchev warned that the current generation risks leaving Sofia without new, modern buildings for key cultural institutions such as a national library, concert hall, museum, and contemporary art gallery, projects that other nations are actively pursuing. Through the anniversary and the special LIK issue, BTA seeks to revive the example of earlier generations who invested significantly in Bulgaria’s intellectual and artistic development.
National Academy of Art Rector Prof. Georgi Yankov expressed gratitude for the partnership with BTA, describing the collaboration as smooth, professional, and built on mutual trust. He acknowledged the challenges posed by years of political instability and frequent elections, which have complicated the implementation of long-term cultural projects. Nevertheless, he noted that the Academy has secured state funding for the reconstruction of its Northern Building, a process initiated two decades ago by Prof. Bozhidar Yonov and now moving forward on schedule.
LIK magazine Editor-in-Chief Assoc. Prof. Georgi Lozanov said that the Academy has always embodied a spirit of freedom. Beyond being an educational institution, he described it as a space for artistic expression, critical interpretation, and professional recognition. Recalling moments such as Christo’s departure from Bulgaria in 1957 due to a lack of artistic freedom, and ideological pressure during the Prague Spring in 1968, Lozanov argued that true art has often been created by those who resisted political conformity. He concluded with a wish that the Academy continue to pass on its most precious value to future generations – freedom.
Since January 2024, the BTA’s literature, art and culture periodical has been freely accessible. All LIK issues since its relaunch in 2022 can be downloaded in electronic format from BTA’s website. The February issue, titled “130 Years of Higher Education in Fine Arts” is also available online in Bulgarian.
