Balgarianovinite.com The national initiative “Accept Me”, aimed at promoting foster care, was launched at the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) National Press Club in Sofia in partnership with the Social Assistance Agency under the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy on Monday.
The opening was attended by caretaker Minister of Labour and Social Policy Hasan Ademov, Executive Director of the Social Assistance Agency Ana Ananieva, Melnik Bishop Gerasim, Secretary General of the Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, and BTA Director General Kiril Valchev.
Valchev said the campaign begins on Holy Monday, marking the start of Holy Week of Orthodox Easter, and highlighted the symbolic message of doing good through foster care.
Valchev announced that BTA and the Social Assistance Agency will organize 33 meetings across the country and produce 33 audiovisual stories featuring foster families, which will be available to all media. A digital book compiling the materials will also be published.
As of December 31, 2025, there were 1,629 approved foster families in Bulgaria, caring for 1,518 children, though the number of families has declined compared to five years ago.
Speaking at the event, Minister Ademov said foster care is “not just a job or an employment contract, but a cause” aimed at creating conditions for support and development in early childhood. He noted that, according to current data cited by the Ministry, there are 1,604 foster families caring for 1,488 children.
Ademov stressed that while foster care is important as a crisis measure, in cases where children stay longer it is essential they experience love, warmth and empathy. He added that foster families should open not only their homes but also their hearts, accepting the children’s fate as a calling.
“Family care is fundamental to building individuals who can fully realize themselves in society,” he said. He emphasized the need to strengthen support for families before, during and after childbirth in order to prevent the need to place children outside their biological families.
Ademov also said more efforts are needed to promote foster care so it is perceived as a natural part of society, describing it as a test of a society’s democratic and civilized values. He wished success to the initiative and thanked BTA, the Social Assistance Agency and all those working to support the cause.
A video telling the story of a foster mother was presented at the event, with more personal stories to be produced as part of the campaign.
