Balgarianovinite.com The Bulgarian National Audit Office (BNAO) published more than 16,000 asset and interest declarations by public officeholders on Friday.
The declarations comprised annual filings submitted by May 15, 2026, and initial and final declarations filed between January and August 2026.
They included declarations by caretaker government members and MPs elected in the April 2026 parliamentary elections.
BNAO also published a list of 637 people who failed to submit declarations by the statutory deadline.
Public officeholders must declare real estate; motor vehicles, watercraft and aircraft; receivables and liabilities exceeding EUR 5,000; securities; shares in limited liability companies and limited partnerships; financial instruments as defined in the Markets in Financial Instruments Act; cryptocurrencies; and income exceeding EUR 5,000, including income other than remuneration for the office held, BNAO noted. They must also declare any third-party real estate, motor vehicles, watercraft and aircraft used on a long-term basis, as well as the assets of their spouses or cohabiting partners and minor children.
Failure to submit a declaration by the deadline carries a fine of between EUR 500 and EUR 1,500. Repeat offences carry fines of between EUR 1,750 and EUR 3,000.
After publication, BNAO checks the declared information and issues a report finding compliance or non-compliance.
If a discrepancy is found, BNAO notifies the declarant, who has 14 days to correct it. If no corrective action is taken, BNAO publishes on its website details of the discrepancy between the declared assets and interests and its findings. For discrepancies of at least EUR 5,000, BNAO sends the findings to the National Revenue Agency (NRA) for action under the Tax and Social Insurance Procedure Code. For discrepancies of at least EUR 12,500, it refers the case to the Commission for Illegal Asset Forfeiture for an asset review of the person concerned and those connected with them.
