Balgarianovinite.com Bulgaria’s National Guards Unit is marking the 147th anniversary of its establishment with a ceremonial changing of the guard in front of the President’s building at noon on Sunday, the Ministry of Defence said.
July 12 marks the anniversary of the first official escort of a Bulgarian prince in 1879. On that date, the First Sofia Cavalry Squadron welcomed Knyaz [Prince] Alexander I upon his arrival on Bulgarian soil and escorted him while performing the duties of an honorary guard. By decree of August 30, 1879, the squadron was designated as the Knyaz’s Personal Escort.
The National Guards Unit, established by a Council of Ministers decree in 2001, is the legal successor to Knyaz Alexander I’s personal guard. It serves as the Bulgarian Armed Forces’ representative military formation and is directly subordinate to the Minister of Defence. It is the official ceremonial unit of the Bulgarian Army.
