Balgarianovinite.com The National Museum of History and the Vasil Levski National Museum held an event here on Thursday to commemorate the 189th birth anniversary of revolutionary and national hero Vasil Levski, dubbed the Apostle of Freedom.
At the event, Minister of Culture Evtim Miloshev highlighted historical memory and the preservation of Levski’s legacy as the foundation of national identity. The minister noted that Levski’s legacy extends far beyond the struggle for national liberation. The Apostle’s ideal of a just and democratic state, founded on equality before the law, civic responsibility, and respect for human dignity, remains relevant today. “Therefore, honouring Levski is not just a tribute to the past but also a responsibility toward the future,” Miloshev said.
The Minister noted the valuable role that museums play as guardians of historical memory and as part of the bridge between generations. “Through their work, they help us keep alive the memory of the people whose deeds laid the spiritual and political foundations of Bulgaria,” he added.
Among the attendees were Education and Science Minister Georgi Valchev, Deputy Culture Minister Plamen Slavov, Archives State Agency Director Mihail Gruev, Sofia University Rector Eliza Stefanova, Bulgarian News Agency and Bulgarian National Radio Directors General Kiril Valchev and Milen Mitev.
The event was organized by the National Museum of History and the Vasil Levski National Museum to mark the 189th anniversary of the birth of Vasil Levski. The initiative is dedicated to Levski’s life, work, and spiritual legacy and aims to honour his memory by bringing together academia, culture, and public memory. The programme included remarks by the directors of the two museums – Boni Petrunova and Dora Chausheva.
