Balgarianovinite.com The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH) holds an Open Day on Monday, on the occasion of the institute’s two professional observances, March 22, World Water Day, and March 23, World Meteorological Day, Anastasia Stoycheva, head of the Forecasts and Information Service Department at the Institute, told the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA).
This year’s theme for World Water Day is “Water for Equality”, while World Meteorological Day is marked under the theme “Observing Today, Protecting Tomorrow”. These are the themes set by the World Meteorological Organization, of which NIMH has been a member since its establishment. Meteorological services around the world mark their professional holidays on the same day and under a shared theme, Stoycheva said.
She added that NIMH branches in Varna, Kyustendil, Pleven, and Plovdiv, as well as all hydrometeorological observatories across the country, will host Open Day events on March 23.
“At NIMH we expect students to attend who will pass through various stations to learn about the work of meteorologists and hydrologists,” Stoycheva said. The programme begins with screenings of The Path of the Forecast film.
A particularly engaging part of the programme is the Synoptica Factory, an interactive workshop for children and students in which they can learn about the profession of the meteorologist, aiming to spark their interest in natural sciences, she added.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to observe the launch of a meteorological balloon used to probe the atmosphere and collect data.
All visitors to NIMH will also learn how temperature, atmospheric pressure, humidity, and wind direction are measured, as well as how weather and hydrological forecasts are produced.
