Balgarianovinite.com The National Revenue Agency (NRA) is carrying out about 400 inspections a day linked to the euro changeover, NRA Communications Directorate Director Anna Mitova said on Friday.
She spoke after an inspection at a Sofia ice rink found no breaches, adding that all the city’s ice rinks would be checked on Friday, and the NRA will keep that pace at least until mid-January.
The NRA is checking businesses offering different services to see whether they comply with the law on the introduction of the euro. Inspectors first check cash receipts, where since January 1 prices must be shown first in euros and then in leva, and they also look for unjustified price increases, Mitova said.
She added that the agency acts on all tips and noted that false information about higher prices is circulating, especially on social media. The NRA checks every report to prevent profiteering linked to the euro changeover in Bulgaria, she said and added that NRA would have a nationwide summary of the inspections early next week.
To date, the agency has issued 69 violation notices for unjustified price hikes, and nine retailers have already been served with penalty orders. Inspectors have also requested documents from a further 300 outlets, which are expected to be submitted in the coming days. Most inspections have focused on food retailers, but Mitova said there is no evidence that smaller outlets are more prone to violations.
She said breaches have been found in about 10% of all inspected outlets.
