Balgarianovinite.com Unity and solidarity among allies are key to guaranteeing security and stability in a more complex international environment, Bulgarian Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova-Chamova said, as quoted by her ministry’s press office. She took part in a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Helsingborg, Sweden.
Petrova-Chamova also noted the importance of strengthening Europe’s contribution within NATO and the need to continue efforts to boost defence capabilities on the alliance’s eastern flank.
A main focus of the discussions was preparations for the upcoming NATO summit in Ankara in July, higher defence spending, strengthening the defence industry and increasing production capacity. The ministers also exchanged views on the ongoing war in Ukraine and the evolving security situation in the wider Middle East region.
Petrova-Chamova called for a stronger focus on security, connectivity and freedom of navigation in the Black Sea region. She also pointed to the important role of diplomacy in ending the war in Ukraine.
The allies agreed on the need for predictable support for Ukraine and a fair distribution of that support among them.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas took part in a NATO–Ukraine Council session.
During the forum, Bulgaria’s foreign minister held a number of bilateral meetings with representatives of the United States, Canada, Ukraine, Germany, France, North Macedonia, Estonia and Portugal, where they discussed current international and regional issues as well as prospects for developing cooperation in security and defence.
