Nearly 95% of Bulgarian Pupils Use AI for Educational Purposes, Study Finds 2026

Balgarianovinite.com Nearly 95% of Bulgarian pupils use artificial intelligence (AI) for educational purposes, with almost half doing so every day or several times a week, according to a study on the readiness of Bulgarian schools to integrate AI, conducted by the Bulgarian Association of Software Companies (BASSCOM). The findings were presented Tuesday in the presence of Education and Science Minister Georgi Valchev. The event featured BASSCOM representatives Dobroslav Dimitrov and Alexander Angelov, while the study was presented by Lachezar Afrikanov.
One of the study’s key conclusions is that Bulgarian schools are not starting from scratch. There is already an accumulated experience, a willingness to experiment, and examples of good practice. Schools, however, are progressing at different speeds and have unequal access to resources.
The survey covered more than 10,038 pupils, 1,767 teachers, and 210 school principals from 63 schools across Bulgaria. The results are intended to support the development of clear guidelines for AI use and data protection, help reduce disparities in access to technology, and support the design of new teaching and assessment models.
The survey shows that AI has become part of pupils’ everyday lives. Fifty-six percent of respondents said they had learned to use AI entirely on their own, while only 6.5% said they had acquired those skills at school. According to the study, this suggests that pupils’ adoption of AI is outpacing formal education, placing schools under pressure to establish a framework for the responsible and sustainable use of the technology.
Teachers possess basic AI literacy. They are currently most prepared to use AI for administrative tasks, where its benefits are easiest to measure.
Teachers most commonly use AI when preparing lessons, particularly for lesson planning and creating assignments. AI’s systematic integration into classroom teaching remains limited. The study found a 0.58-point gap between teachers’ self-assessed theoretical preparedness (4.20) and their actual use of AI in the classroom (3.62), indicating a need for greater practical support, including methodological guidance, clear procedures, and dedicated staff to assist implementation.
Responding to а question from the media, Minister Valchev said AI should serve as a supporting tool in education. He said it could help analyze each pupil’s progress, personalize learning, assist teachers in identifying learning gaps, and suggest ways to address them. AI could also significantly reduce teachers’ administrative workload, he added, describing these as the two main directions for AI integration in the coming years.
Valchev acknowledged that the use of AI also presents significant challenges, particularly the temptation for pupils to submit AI-generated work as their own. He said the ministry would address this through teacher training and by encouraging pupils to understand that presenting someone else’s work as their own ultimately undermines their learning.
Asked whether teachers would receive AI training, Valchev said the ministry plans to establish an initial network of schools that already have experience and readiness to use AI. These schools will serve as pilot projects, whose experience will be used to develop training programmes and gradually expand AI integration across the entire education system.
Teachers will play the leading role in introducing AI into the classroom, he added. The education system’s task is to establish clear rules and provide the necessary support to ensure that new technologies are used responsibly and in the best interests of pupils, the Minister noted.
