Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is pleading with President Donald Trump for more public support as he fights for his political life in the Oct. 27 elections, Axios reported Sunday.
Netanyahu’s main challenger is Gadi Eisenkot of the centrist political party Yashar, which translates to “Honest.” Eisenkot had a 40-year career in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), and is viewed as even more hawkish than Netanyahu in his opposition to Palestinian statehood and desire to see Hamas completely destroyed.
Axios’s Barak Ravid cited an anonymous source saying Netanyahu spoke with Trump “twice in the last three days and asked him to double down on his Truth Social post last week endorsing him.”
The White House “sees Netanyahu’s aggressive lobbying as a ‘sign of desperation’ and an indication that the Israeli leader thinks he’s trailing,” Ravid wrote.
He added, “The source said Netanyahu even suggested language for additional statements of support,” and “proposed that Trump hold calls with Israeli reporters to express further support.”
Trump held off for months in endorsing Netanyahu, finally writing a lengthy Truth Social post last week encouraging Israeli voters, “Please let this Letter serve to represent my Complete and Total Endorsement of Bibi Netanyahu in his upcoming Race for Re-Election as Prime Minister of Israel,” and suggesting his defeat would would be detrimental to U.S.-Israel relations.
The Jerusalem Post reported that Eisenkot leads Netanyahu’s Likud party, “but neither of the two major political blocs has enough seats to secure a majority in the 120-seat Knesset.”
A U.S. official told Ravid that Trump will benefit, regardless of the election outcome.
“If Netanyahu wins — or remains in power as a caretaker prime minister — Trump could claim credit for rescuing him politically and use that leverage to press for concessions,” while, “If Netanyahu loses and his opponents form a government, Israel’s new leaders would still have every incentive to cultivate good relations with Trump.”
Neither the White House nor Netanyahu’s office didn’t responded to Axios’s requests for comment.
