Balgarianovinite.com Presentation of the collection Western Bulgarian Outlands – History and Perspectives vol. 1 will take place on April 24 (Friday) at 6 p.m. CEST in the hall of the Cultural and Information Centre in Bosilegrad. The event is organized by the Institute for Historical Research at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, the Scientific Institute of the Western Outlands and the Regional Historical Museum – Sofia.
The history, identity and future of Bulgarians in the Western Bulgarian Outlands are the focus of the joint scientific publication, which brings together 24 studies by scientists, teachers and public figures from Bulgaria and Serbia. The collection is a publication of the Institute for Historical Research at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and the Scientific Institute of the Western Outlands. The authors are Assoc. Prof. Angel Dzhonev and Assoc. Prof. Aleksander Grebenarov, and the reviewers are Prof. Daniel Vachkov and Assoc. Prof. Rositsa Lelyova. The scientific editing of the articles was done by Assoc. Prof. Slavi Slavov. Many associates of the cause of the Western Outlands support the publication of the collection, with Eng. Aleksander Tsegrilovski as the main sponsor.
The publication includes interdisciplinary research on the past and future of the residents of the region, presented at the scientific conference “Western Bulgarian Outlands – History and Perspectives”, held on November 8, 2024 in Sofia. According to the organizers of the event, the 24 included texts – mostly historical, but also ethnological, ethnodemographic, cartographic, literary and legal studies – present the multi-layered palette of events in the region, dating from the Middle Ages to the present day. Particular attention is paid to areas such as Bosilegrad, Tran and Tsaribrod, where the Bulgarian population traditionally predominates, but presently faces serious demographic and social challenges.
“The collection is an attempt by Bulgarian scientific thought, through an analysis of the past and the present, to foresee the prospects of the Western Bulgarian outskirts and to mobilize the Bulgarian public to stop the destructive processes that threaten this Bulgarian historical community. Last month, we successfully presented the collection in Sofia, now we are about to talk about this edition in Bosilegrad, where the Cultural Information Center (CIC) will play the role of a symbolic host,” Ivan Nikolov, chair of the CIC Bosilegrad and one of the authors of articles in the collection, told BTA’s BG World Directorate. He added that the collection aims to help more fully preserve the Bulgarian cultural and historical heritage in the Western Outlands, by protecting the memory of the Bulgarians and their descendants, who have defended their nationality for centuries, as well as to present to the public the current, contemporary problems of the Bulgarians in the region.
