The new L.I.N.K. gallery in Sofia opened on Friday with the exhibition “Attractions/Destinies”, which brings together works by 14 artists.
In her welcoming address, gallery founder Ilinka Chergarova explained that the exhibition’s title also reflects the direction in which the gallery intends to develop.
“Every relationship starts with attraction. Of course, many different things can result from it, both positive and negative,” she said. “Contemporary art does exactly that: it reflects our reality and emotions,” Chergarova added.
She explained that the gallery plans to collaborate with other galleries and art institutions. The inaugural exhibition exemplifies this approach, having been organised in partnership with the French Institute, the Sofia City Art Gallery, the National Academy of Arts and The Pill Gallery, which has locations in Paris and Istanbul.
The event was also attended by Culture Minister Evtim Miloshev, who emphasised the attraction between people and art. “For years, as a conservator-restorer, Ilinka Chergarova protected art from time, and now, with this space, she gives time to art, or rather gives it a future, and that is truly exciting,” Miloshev said.
The exhibition’s curator, Kathy Alliou, said she had long wanted to organise an exhibition featuring the artists whose works are presented in the current show.
The participating Bulgarian and international artists include Apolonia Sokol, Boryana Petkova, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Dimitar Solakov, Iskra Blagoeva, Mihail Novakov, Kalin Serapionov, Mariana Vassileva, Maryn Varbanov, Nadezhda Oleg Lyahova, Nedko Solakov, Plamen Dejanoff and Sejla Kameric.
“To have a strong art scene, we all need to do what we can to support artists in both the public and private sectors,” Alliou said. “For me, a strong country is one that recognises that its culture rests on the strength of its artists,” the curator added.
