President Iliana Iotova advocated the establishment of a Bulgarian Cultural Institute while speaking at a reception at Bulgaria’s Consulate General in New York on Wednesday evening marking the country’s Independence Day, September 22.
Bulgaria is the only European Union Member State that does not have such an institution, she noted with “great concern.” The President cited Spain’s Instituto Cervantes and Germany’s Goethe-Institut as examples.
Iotova said that establishing such an institution was “a dream of hers,” particularly given that Bulgaria is a country that can take pride in 14 centuries of history. She expressed confidence that New York would be one of the cities where the future Bulgarian Cultural Institute would have a branch.
The head of State also highlighted Bulgaria’s strategic geographic location, which, she said, creates opportunities in these challenging geopolitical times. In particular, she pointed to Bulgaria’s indispensable role in the development of transport and energy corridors.
Next year, Bulgaria will host a regional connectivity meeting dedicated to the Middle Corridor between Europe and Asia.
Iotova also said that she had met with major US investors who have expressed interest in Bulgaria, adding that the meeting was held Wednesday at their own initiative. They will visit the country next month, she said, without providing further details.
In this regard, Iotova spoke of the investment opportunities in Bulgaria and urged members of the Bulgarian community in the largest US city to promote Bulgaria and advocate for the country whenever the opportunity arises.
The Independence Day reception was organized by the Embassy of Bulgaria in Washington, D.C., and the Consulate General of Bulgaria in New York.
The hosts of the reception were Stefka Yovcheva, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Bulgaria in the United States, and Angel Angelov, Consul General of Bulgaria in New York.
In addition to the President, the event’s guests of honour included Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova and Minister of Labour and Social Policy Nataliya Efremova.
Iotova is visiting New York, where she is leading the Bulgarian delegation to the General Debate during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. Earlier on Wednesday, she delivered her address from the UN podium during the debate.
