Balgarianovinite.com The National Network for Children called for the restoration of the parliamentary committee responsible for children and family issues in an open letter addressed to Prime Minister Rumen Radev and the ruling majority in the 52nd National Assembly, the organization said on Saturday.
On May 28, Parliament decided to reduce the number of standing committees from 25 to 24. MPs approved the abolition of the standalone Demographic Policy Committee and its replacement with a Committee on Labour, Demographic and Social Policy.
“The change may be presented as an organizational measure, but organizational decisions always reflect political priorities. When the state establishes committees on budget, defence, energy, agriculture or European affairs, it signals that these issues deserve dedicated attention, expertise, legislative focus, parliamentary oversight and debate. When it removes the committee on children, it also sends a political message,” the National Network for Children said.
The organization described the decision as particularly concerning given the serious challenges Bulgaria continues to face in areas such as violence against children, child poverty, mental health, healthcare, access to quality education and family support.
“Every year on June 1, politicians speak about the importance of children for Bulgaria’s future. The real measure of commitment, however, is not festive greetings or participation in public events, but the decisions the state takes during the other 364 days of the year,” the statement said.
The organization argued that issues concerning children should be treated as a distinct national priority rather than being addressed solely as part of other policy areas. It added that the position of children within the Bulgarian state should be strengthened, not weakened.
