Independent reporter Nick Shirley’s probe into rampant food stamp fraud on the streets of Seattle ended with him running away from angry suspected drug addicts, after one of his security guards had their gun stolen during a sidewalk skirmish with a group of homeless people.
The final seconds of Shirley’s Wednesday report showed him and his crew sprinting down the sidewalk as they darted to jump in a car.
“This is arguably one of the most dangerous situations I’ve ever been in,” another one of Shirley’s security guys told him when he jumped inside a car and started speeding off to safety. “You’re being targeted right now. Everyone’s saying ‘Nick Shirley’s here! Nick Shirley’s here!’”
That all came after a wild investigation which showed how street hoods trade their SNAP funds for cash — or fentanyl, oftentimes. Shirley likened it to swapping Pokemon cards, only this was for pennies on the dollar; he asked a man who said he had $306 on his food stamp card how much he was willing to deal it for, and the man said he was willing to sell it for $120.
Shirley then linked up with a middle-aged woman from Vietnam who said she could make a deal with him. She ushered him over to a seafood market where the cashier rang them up for $120 for a can of spam and one plate of sushi; Shirley — who was donning a Seahawks beanie and face mask as he tried to hide his identity — said it was clear the woman was part of a “mafia-style ring,” where she was getting a kickback from the store for funneling bogus food stamp deals to them.
After leaving the store together, Shirley and his crew confronted the woman.
“You’re committing fraud. Food stamp fraud. It’s against the law,” Shirley told her.
The woman took it in stride. “I know, yeah.” She then started ratting other people out on the street who were apparently running the same scheme.
Shirley then returned to the seafood market to ask why they were allowing the fraud to take place. While there, all hell broke loose on the sidewalks outside, with one of the security guards trading blows with a “homeless individual” — which led to his gun falling out in a crowd of suspected fentanyl addicts. The security guy then started punching other guys around him when no one would return his gun.
Once he was filled in as he was leaving the store, Shirley and the other members of his crew started running for safety. A homeless suspected drug addict tried to join their getaway, but he apparently couldn’t keep up.
“I’m on fenty, I can’t run!” the man yelled as Shirley skirted off.
Watch above.
