Balgarianovinite.com Odesa documentary film director Elena Zhekova, who is of Bulgarian origin, celebrated her 99th birthday on June 18 in Odesa, Ukraine.
Zhekova was born in the city of Odesa in the Bulgarian family of Petar Zhekov, who was originally from the village of Blagoevo. She graduated from Odesa I.I. Mechnikov National University, and went on to study directing at the I. K. Karpenko-Karyi Kyiv National University of Theatre, Cinema and Television. As a director, she has created about 30 popular science, documentary, educational and informational films, as well as many films dedicated to the combat and frontline path during World War II.
She worked for the Odesa-based Film Studio “A. Dovzhenko” for 75 years as an editor and director.
“I had a very rich and meaningful life, I faced many difficulties, but I have always been guided by the moral truth of giving my all. I have always told myself – I am Bulgarian and I must be worthy of this, to move forward and achieve my goals,” Zhekova told BTA.
“Elena Zhekova is a bright representative of the Bulgarian community in Ukraine. She is a legendary woman and director. She leaves behind a great mark in the life of cinema and art in Odesa,” said Dimitar Terzi, director of the All-Ukrainian Centre for Bulgarian Culture in Odesa, adding that in fall the centre will organize a screening of Elena Zhekova’s film “Bulgarians in the Northern Black Sea Region. The Village of Blagoevo.”
Congratulations to Elena Zhekova were also sent by the Union of Cinematographers of Ukraine and the veteran organization of the Peresypskyi district of Odesa. Professor Andrey Gorchakov from the National Academy of Culture and Arts Management presented the film director with an honorary diploma of the Ukrainian Foundation for Culture named after poet and public figure Borys Oliynyk.
