Balgarianovinite.com Representatives of local government, social services, and educational institutions joined a discussion at the BTA National Press Club in Gotse Delchev Monday as part of the “Foster Me” national foster care campaign, organized by BTA and the Social Assistance Agency.
Kostadin Hariskov, head of the Department of Education, Health, Social Activities, Culture and Sports in the Gotse Delchev Municipality, pointed out that the “Foster Me” programme has been implemented in the Municipality for 14 years, and there are currently 13 active foster families. He emphasized that the Municipality has a supporting role and works in close partnership with the Social Assistance Agency, kindergartens and schools to ensure a good environment for children.
The head of the Child Protection Department, Blagoy Barbutev, noted that the main goal of social workers is for the child to remain in their biological family, whenever possible. According to him, before a child is removed, various measures are taken to support the parents, including consultations and work with specialists. When the risk to the child continues, placement in a foster family is initiated, while work with the biological parents does not stop after that.
Chief Social Worker Irina Sarandeva drew attention to the need for more foster families in Gotse Delchev Municipality, especially those who can care for babies and newborns. She explained that for each placement, the most suitable family is sought according to the age and needs of the child, and foster parents have different profiles and training to work with different age groups.
Social worker Petranka Taraninova emphasized that the process of children’s adaptation to foster care is different for each child and depends mainly on their age and experiences before placement. She noted that foster parents are not motivated by financial reasons, but by the desire to help children at risk by providing them with peace, security and a family environment.
The Director of the Detelina Kindergarten, Atanaska Shagova, said that over the years, several children raised in foster families have passed through the kindergarten, who were no different from the others. According to her, the team supports the foster parents through conversations, understanding and professional assistance, and in the kindergarten there is no division between the children because of the family environment in which they grow up.
Foster mother Katerina Hadzhieva, who has cared for eight children since 2018, described saying goodbye as the hardest part of fostering, but said seeing children thrive in permanent families makes the experience deeply rewarding.
The national joint initiative of BTA and SAA, “Foster Me”, was launched at the National Press Club of BTA in Sofia. A discussion was held at the end of April in Svishtov. The initiative will include 33 meetings in all BTA press clubs across the country.
“Foster Me” is part of the project “Strengthening the capacity of Social Assistance Agency staff in relation to the modernization of social protection systems” – Component 1, aimed at the development of foster care in Bulgaria and strengthening the capacity of those involved in it: social workers, municipal employees, foster parents and others. The project is funded under the Human Resources Development Programme, co-financed by the European Social Fund Plus.
