Balgarianovinite.com A TIR truck travelling from Sofia to Burgas crashed through the central barrier on the Trakia motorway and crossed into oncoming traffic early on Friday afternoon. One person was killed and two others were injured as the truck collided with two cars travelling towards Sofia. The crash occurred near the village of Zheleznik, in the Karnobat area. Regional Development and Public Works Minister Ivan Shishkov came to the scene.
An air ambulance helicopter was dispatched to transport the injured to hospital. One of the victims, a 46-year-old man, is in a stable condition and has been admitted to the intensive care unit of a hospital in Burgas. He has been diagnosed with fractures and a liver contusion, which does not currently require surgery, the hospital’s press office said.
Initial tests for alcohol and drugs on the lorry driver were negative. The final results will be determined after chemical and toxicological analysis of blood samples, Burgas District Prosecutor Georgi Chinev told reporters. He said the driver had initially claimed that a tyre blowout caused the vehicle to cross into the opposite carriageway. Chinev stressed that this account would be verified solely through the forensic examination of the vehicle ordered as part of the investigation.
Minister Shishkov said at the scene: “There is no driver visible in the toll camera images. There has obviously been some kind of manipulation,” Minister Shishkov said at the scene. He pledged that all crash barriers failing to meet the required standards will be replaced, but added that even compliant barriers would not have stopped a truck entering the central reservation at such an angle.
“The first thing we need to do is stop drivers from driving in such an appalling manner. This shows that our society is seriously unwell,” Shishkov said.
He added that, because of the incident, the government will carry out a thorough review together with the Interior Ministry and the Customs Agency to establish why the TIR truck had been travelling such a short route and whether it had been carrying any cargo.
By 8:50pm on Friday, heavy recovery vehicles had begun removing the truck and the damaged cars from the scene.
