An orange alert for heavy rainfall on Tuesday has been issued for parts of eastern and southern Bulgaria, while a yellow warning is in place for the northern and central regions of the country, said the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH). The areas without a weather warning are Blagoevgrad, Kyustendil, Pernik and Sofia City, all in the southwest.
The orange alert, the second-highest of three warning levels, applies to the regions of Smolyan, Kardzhali, Haskovo, Yambol, Burgas and Varna. People there are advised to be prepared to protect themselves and their property. Flooding of properties and transport networks is possible, along with disruptions to electricity supplies, communications and water services. Partial evacuations may also be necessary. Driving conditions could be hazardous due to reduced visibility and aquaplaning, the NIMH said on its website.
The yellow, lowest-level, alert apples to the regions of Vidin, Vratsa, Montana, Pleven, Lovech, Gabrovo, Veliko Tarnovo, Ruse, Targovishte, Razgrad, Silistra, Shumen, Dobrich, Pazardzhik, Plovdiv, Stara Zagora and Sofia Region (as opposed to Sofia City). The yellow warning indicates the possibility of a small number of localized floods, difficult driving conditions due to reduced visibility and aquaplaning, and potential disruptions to outdoor activities.
According to the NIMH weather forecast, cloudy and rainy conditions will persist in Bulgaria on Tuesday. Rainfall will be temporarily heavy and substantial in parts of central and eastern Bulgaria, while it will ease and stop in the southwestern regions. Temperatures will remain largely unchanged throughout the day, with highs of between 10C and 15C; in Sofia 11C. Atmospheric pressure will rise, remaining above the monthly average.
