Balgarianovinite.com “Certainly, our supporters expect Andrey Gurov to be named as presidential candidate by a strong initiative committee,” Radan Kanev, leader of the opposition Democrats for a Strong Bulgaria (DSB), said in an interview with Nova TV.
According to Kanev, they believe that such a candidacy would have a chance of attracting broad support and providing a strong alternative to the government of Rumen Radev, as well as being capable of defeating Iliana Iotova. “We are obliged to respond to this expectation, and the expectation of our voters is unequivocal,” Kanev added.
Asked whether support from GERB had been agreed upon, Kanev said that no support had been agreed. “We cannot comment on the date when the candidacy will be announced or on the composition of the initiative committee. Absolutely nothing has been agreed,” Kanev added.
According to him, it is GERB’s responsibility to respond to the expectations of its own voters. “GERB is politically much closer to Radev than it is to DSB,” Kanev said.
Asked whether it would be a problem for voters if Gurov sought support from GERB, Radan Kanev said he was highly skeptical of any efforts to seek such support.
Regarding a possible vice-presidential candidacy for Georgi Kandev, Kanev said that Kandev enjoys broad support, but the choice of vice-presidential candidate belongs to Gurov.
When asked whether there are ministers who would be better off leaving the government, Kanev said that DSB sees a need for a change, namely Deputy Prime Minister Ivo Hristov, whose responsibilities in the government are not even clear.
Kanev said that Ivo Hristov is systematically and consistently dividing society. “The power that Rumen Radev and the people around him have should be bringing society together,” Kanev added.
Radan Kanev also commented on the government’s programme, which he described as extremely unsatisfactory. “This is a document that is about 80% verbal fluff, created with artificial intelligence, and is more of a campaign document for the presidential elections,” Kanev said.
According to him, the sections dealing with the administration, healthcare, justice, and other areas reveal an effort toward extreme centralization of power, on a scale not seen in the past 30 years. “This is what truly concerns us in DSB,” Kanev added.
Asked whether the opposition is preparing protests in the autumn, he replied that they first need to see the draft state budget and assess how well it corresponds to the government’s programme.
