Balgarianovinite.com Thirty-two out of a total of 52 dam complexes and significant dams managed by the Ministry of Environment and Water are over 80% full, and some of them are already overflowing, Bulgarian Environment and Water Minister Rositsa Karamfilova said on Bulgarian National Television on Tuesday.
“There is no way we can restrain nature, but we can apply relevant tools and adequate management to reduce the damage caused by a natural disaster,” she added, commenting on the heavy rain in some parts of the country over the weekend.
“The fill rate [of the major dams] is 20% better than for the same period of last year,” Karamfilova said further, specifying that the water level of irrigation dams is also high.
A state of emergency was declared in several municipalities across the regions of Veliko Tarnovo, Gabrovo and Lovech (North Central Bulgaria) after rivers and dams overflowed as a result of torrential overnight rainfall. One fatality has been reported so far – a 55-year-old man in the area of Sevlievo. Homes and yards were flooded, roads closed to traffic, and people evacuated in some settlements.
The Environment and Water Minister said that a comprehensive check will be carried out shortly of the competent basin directorate and the Ministry of Energy in connection with the manner of management of the Alexander Stamboliiski Dam (North Central Bulgaria), which started to overflow on May 23.
