Balgarianovinite.com More than 800 police officers have been deployed to ensure traffic organization and security in Sofia during the passage of the Giro d’Italia cycling race, with a medical helicopter also available to serve residents in areas with restricted access along the route, Chief Inspector Ivan Georgiev, head of the Mass Events sector at the Sofia Directorate of Interior, said on Sunday.
Georgiev noted that part of the route passes through areas with a single access road, such as Samokovsko Shose Street, which requires additional security and access measures. For this reason, the Sofia Municipality’s Emergency Assistance and Prevention Directorate has provided an air ambulance to serve the local population if needed.
He added that three wedding celebrations are taking place in the same area. A special arrangement has been made so that at certain times, under the supervision of Traffic Police and on-site officers, guests will be able to pass by car and reach the venues.
The race is expected to enter Sofia between 4:20 pm and 4:40 pm via Samokovsko Shose Street from the direction of the villages of Dolni and Gorni Okol, passing through Kokalyane, Pancharevo and Gorublyane. The route continues along Copenhagen Blvd., Tsarigradsko Shose Blvd., Eagles’ Bridge (Orlov Most) junction, Tsar Osvoboditel Blvd., and finishes at Monument to Tsar Liberator.
Traffic on key boulevards and streets in Sofia has been restricted and adjustments to public transport have been introduced due to the race, with a gradual restoration expected no later than 9:00 pm.
He also warned that the launch of aircraft is prohibited, except for those previously declared and approved by the authorities, adding that violators will face significant fines.
Alongside Sofia police, representatives of the Sofia Municipality, volunteers, and teams from the organisers and other institutions are also involved in the operation.
