An exhibition titled Equality for People with Intellectual Disabilities opened at Parliament on Wednesday, featuring paintings by Anna Dimitrova, who has Down syndrome.
Dimitrova, known as Ani, has attended Varna’s Riviera Day Centre for Adults with Disabilities for 15 years.
The exhibition is hosted at the invitation of Democratic Bulgaria MP Svilen Trifonov, who discovered her work by chance during a visit to his constituency. He said she speaks little, but her paintings tell viewers more than they can express to her in words.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Board Chair Maria Chankova of the Association for Support of People with Intellectual Disabilities said people with disabilities must be able to exercise their right to independent living in practice, beyond its recognition on paper.
Chankova said amendments to the Persons and Family Act passed first reading about a decade ago but stalled before second reading because of repeated elections, rather than flaws in the proposals. She said people with intellectual disabilities cannot count on family support as adults and called for legal changes to uphold everyone’s right to equality.
