Balgarianovinite.com Ahead of the Day of Gratitude and Homage to the Victims of the Communist Regime on February 1, parliamentary groups issued declarations in Parliament on Friday, focusing on the preservation of historical truth, the lessons of political violence, the need for reconciliation, and the remembrance of oppressed communities.
Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria (CC-DB) MP Atanas Atanassov stressed Bulgaria’s duty to honour the victims of the communist regime, condemn its perpetrators, and defend historical truth. He recalled the mass death sentences handed down by the People’s Court on February 1, 1945, and described the period following 1944 as one of the darkest in Bulgarian history. Atanassov cited statistical data on arrests and executions and warned against attempts to distort or silence historical memory. He said that remembrance must be accompanied by a daily struggle against injustice and the erosion of the rule of law.
GERB-UDF MP Toma Bikov said that the suspension of the rule of law inevitably leads to political violence, making events such as those of February 1, 1945 more likely. Bikov placed the People’s Court within a broader historical context marked by coups and constitutional crises and warned against cycles of revenge and retribution. He referred to Bulgaria’s post-1989 transition as flawed but successful in preventing further mass repression and preserving social peace, describing this as a major achievement of the democratic process.
BSP-United Left MP Galin Durev called for an end to what he described as “dates of division” and urged that history not be used as a political instrument. The parliamentary group’s declaration said remembrance should serve as a source of wisdom rather than a tool for confrontation. Durev stressed that memory should not be selective and should not be used to claim moral superiority. He called for respect, humility, and shared responsibility toward the victims, adding that Bulgaria needs reconciliation based on awareness and a forward-looking political approach.
Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) – New Beginning MP Hyusein Hafazov focused on the repression of Bulgarian Muslims during the communist period. Hafazov rejected what he described as myths surrounding the People’s Court and said the Bulgarian authorities at the time had acted with excessive zeal against political opponents. He recalled decades of assimilation policies, restrictions on religious practices, and the forced change of names during the so-called Revival Process. The group called for judicial accountability and effective sentences for those responsible, noting that a formal claim has been submitted to the Military District Prosecution Office.
The declarations marked the parliamentary commemoration of the Day of Gratitude and Homage to the Victims of the Communist Regime, observed annually on February 1, which falls on a Sunday in 2026.
