Balgarianovinite.com Parts of Bulgaria were hit by torrential rain and hailstorms on Monday, causing flooding, road closures and emergency response operations in Sofia and several areas of Pazardzhik Region.
Heavy rain accompanied by hail in Sofia flooded central streets and boulevards. Sofia Municipality said eight teams were on standby to respond to emergency calls following the downpour and hailstorm.
In the Batak area, intense rainfall caused the level of the Stara Reka River to rise sharply, the Pazardzhik Regional Directorate of the Interior Ministry said. Trees and branches were brought down by the rain and strong winds, including on the Peshtera-Batak road.
Fire service and police teams are working at the scene to secure the affected section and remove fallen vegetation. The Peshtera-Batak road was temporarily closed to traffic until conditions return to normal, with drivers advised to use a detour via Varvara, Kostandovo railway station, Rakitovo and Batak.
Police urged motorists to follow the instructions of law enforcement authorities and drive with increased caution.
A 58-year-old man went missing amid the storm in the Lukovitsa neighbourhood of Peshtera, which was flooded earlier on Monday, police spokesperson Miroslav Stoyanov said. Police teams are using a drone to search the area around the man’s house, while tracking dogs have also joined the operation.
A partial state of emergency has been declared in the village of Kochan in southwestern Bulgaria and along part of the road between Kochan and Zhizhevo after torrential rain on Sunday caused extensive damage, the Satovcha Municipality said on Monday. The order was issued by Satovcha Mayor Arben Mimenov and covers the built-up area of Kochan and part of the Kochan-Zhizhevo road.
The downpour lasted about an hour and a half, damaging municipal and private infrastructure, the municipality said. Numerous private homes were flooded, with ground floors, household belongings, electrical appliances, tools and other property affected. Agricultural land was also damaged, with many gardens levelled and crops destroyed.
The storm also damaged street infrastructure. Road surfaces were washed away, at least four retaining walls collapsed, and wastewater drainage systems became clogged. Large quantities of mud, stones, sand and gravel accumulated on the streets of Kochan and on the road to Zhizhevo.
After the rain stopped, the Satovcha Municipality launched emergency recovery operations, deploying municipal workers, excavators and trucks to remove the debris.
The municipal disaster response headquarters met on Monday morning to address the situation. Blagoevgrad Regional Governor Vasil Trendafilov and the Operational Centre of the Regional Directorate for Fire Safety and Civil Protection in Blagoevgrad were informed, the municipality said.
