Balgarianovinite.com Pencho Slaveykov’s works and Bulgarian modernism were the focus of a discussion at the Bulgarian News Agency’s (BTA) National Press Club in Blagoevgrad. Titled Pencho Slaveykov Today, the initiative is organized by BTA to mark the 160th anniversary of the poet’s birth.
Prof. Tsvetan Rakyovski said Pencho Slaveykov was an exceptional poet and one of the greatest masters of the Bulgarian poetic language. He described Slaveykov’s slim volume Dream of Happiness as “an outstanding testament to talent and rhythm” that demonstrates the poet’s extraordinary craftsmanship. Rakyovski challenged the widely held view that Slaveykov’s poetry is difficult, highlighting instead his ability to play freely with verse length and stress patterns.
Assoc. Prof. Roman Hadzhikosev said the portraits in On the Island of the Blessed are among the book’s most compelling features because they reveal Slaveykov’s remarkable sense of humour and linguistic boldness. He described the collection as an “awkward” and “mechanically assembled” work lacking a clear compositional structure, but added that it nevertheless contains texts of exceptional artistic value. He stressed that the portraits deserve particular attention.
Assoc. Prof. Boyka Ilieva said Slaveykov’s connection with Italy extends far beyond the notion of voluntary exile and his final days there. In her view, Italy became a place of creative plans, spiritual inspiration and hope for the future. She added that literary historian Konstantin Mutafov regarded Slaveykov as a model of a highly educated, moral writer and as a benchmark in Bulgarian literature.
Lyubima Dimitrova, a long-serving Bulgarian language and literature teacher and former expert at the Regional Education Inspectorate in Blagoevgrad, said Slaveykov’s works have only a limited presence in today’s school curriculum, creating a risk that students will develop an incomplete understanding of one of the leading figures of Bulgarian modernism.
Assoc. Prof. Yordan Eftimov, who moderated the discussion, recalled the links between Slaveykov and actor Krastyo Sarafov as well as literary critic Vasil Pundev. He emphasized the importance of Slaveykov’s correspondence, describing it as a valuable part of the writer’s literary legacy that deserves to become better known, including among students.
The Pencho Slaveykov Today initiative is to be held at all 33 BTA national press clubs in Bulgaria. The first discussion, dedicated to the poet’s 160th birth anniversary, took place in his hometown of Tryavna (Central Bulgaria) on April 27. Similar events have since been held in Samokov, Kazanlak, Stara Zagora, Kyustendil, Pernik, Haskovo, Kardzhali, Pazardzhik, Gabrovo, Veliko Tarnovo, Pleven, Svishtov and Ruse.
The December 2026 issue of BTA’s LIK magazine will be dedicated to Pencho Slaveykov. In addition to reports from the discussions, the issue will include specially written texts of 160 words each by 160 people, marking the poet’s 160th birth anniversary.
