Pernik marked its City Day on Monday with a flag-raising ceremony, addresses by officials, and the presentation of annual awards for contributions to the city. The celebration, dedicated to St John of Rila, the city’s patron saint, took place in front of the Palace of Culture.
Mayor Stanislav Vladimirov praised residents for their solidarity and determination, while Regional Governor Greta Koleva stressed the need to improve infrastructure, address overdevelopment and air pollution, and ensure a safe urban environment. Municipal Council Chair Denislav Zahariev called for unity and dialogue to advance the city’s development, highlighting the importance of preserving traditions and creating more opportunities for young people. A congratulatory address from President Iliana Iotova was also read at the ceremony.
The annual “For Contribution” awards were presented to individuals and organizations for achievements in healthcare, social services, education, culture, sports, journalism, security and public order. Recipients included local newspaper Sapernik [Contender], marking its 35th anniversary; the Regional History Museum, marking 40 years since the opening of its Underground Museum of Mining; and Rahila Angelova Hospital, marking 70 years since its construction.
The programme also included the awarding of honorary citizenship and distinctions for contributions to sports, a procession of pupils from St Ivan of Rila Primary School through the city centre, and a flower-laying ceremony at the monument to their patron saint.
The day’s remaining events include a folk festival, a museum exhibition and an evening concert by Orlin Goranov at Krakra Square.
