Balgarianovinite.com An exhibition featuring 70 grape varieties was held at the Institute of Viticulture and Enology in Pleven Friday as part of the 4th Time for Wine Festival of Wine and Farm Delicacies, which opened in the city on the same day.
The institute presented 49 varieties, including nearly 30 table grapes, 17 wine grapes and five newly selected varieties. The remaining samples came from agricultural institutes in Kyustendil and Obraztsov Chiflik. Only about 10 of the varieties were not Bulgarian selections, showcasing the history of grape breeding in Bulgaria.
Experts highlighted Muscat grapes as among the world’s oldest cultivated varieties, noting that Bulgaria’s oldest Muscat is Tamyanka, while Muscat Ottonel is internationally renowned. Wines made from Muscat grapes are valued for their distinctive, intense aromas, they emphasized.
The programme also featured two lectures on Muscat varieties and grape terpenes. Visitors could taste grapes and selected Muscat wines from Bulgarian wineries.
