The Interior Ministry has carried out 119 specialized police operations to combat crimes against citizens’ political rights in connection with the upcoming presidential election on October 25, the ministry’s press office said on Tuesday.
The ministry’s round-the-clock public hotline has received 34 reports of violations of electoral law, 31 of which concerned alleged vote-buying. Four pre-trial proceedings have been opened: one under an expedited procedure and three under the standard procedure.
Since September 28, the Sofia Directorate of the Interior and regional directorates have been conducting specialized police operations across the country under an approved plan. The operations target crimes against citizens’ political rights and violations of electoral law, and involve efforts to identify, prevent and investigate planned or ongoing criminal activity under Articles 167-169g of the Criminal Code. Teams from the General Directorate of Gendarmerie, Special Operations and Counter-Terrorism are also involved. As of October 13, a total of 119 operations hve been carried out and 373 warning notices have been issued under Article 65 of the Ministry of the Interior Act.
A taskforce has been set up within the Interior Ministry to coordinate preparations by its departments for the presidential election. Its main job is to combat crimes against citizens’ political rights, maintain public order and ensure fire safety.
The work is being carried out according to a specific plan and in ongoing coordination with the Central Election Commission, the Prosecution Service, the State Agency for National Security and other relevant institutions. Information units have been established within the ministry’s central and regional directorates to compile data related to the electoral process.
There are 27 presidential and vice-presidential candidate tickets for the October 25 election, proposed by 20 nomination committees and seven political parties.
