Politicians are frightening people by planning to order air defence systems that may not arrive for years, while neglecting the country’s bomb shelters, presidential candidate Ivelin Mihaylov of the Velichie party said on Saturday.
Mihaylov and his running mate, vice-presidential candidate Prof. Yuliana Mateeva, attended an open day at the Historical Park near the village of Neofit Rilski, Varna Region.
Maintaining bomb shelters should become a priority, and they should not be stolen from, destroyed or replaced with apartment blocks, Mihaylov said. He added that his party’s main goal was to change the system of government so that those in power would finally be accountable to the public.
The president is directly elected by the people and has considerable authority, with the officeholder’s voice heard around the world, Mihaylov said. In his view, the presidency could exercise the necessary oversight to prevent those in power from becoming unaccountable.
Mihaylov also identified the fight against the mafia as a key priority, saying that security was impossible in a mafia-run state. He expressed confidence that, if elected alongside Mateeva, they would make politicians more responsible and honest.
Commenting on the election campaign, Mihaylov described it as rigged. He said that both Andrey Gurov and Kostadin Kostadinov were taking overly extreme positions, which he argued worked in favour of Iliana Iotova.
“This predetermines the outcome if people are influenced by what they see on television. But if they judge by actions and seek information from other sources, we could upset the calculations,” Mihaylov said.
