Politico correspondent Dasha Burns asked U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) if President Donald Trump was a “liability” for his gubernatorial campaign.
Donalds raised eyebrows last month when it was discovered he removed references to the president on his campaign website. The move was a stunning turn of events considering the fact that Trump endorsed Donalds ahead of his resounding win in Florida’s Republican primary.
On Friday’s episode of her show The Conversation, Burns brought up Trump’s sudden absence from Donalds’s campaign materials.
“I know you’ve been asked about this because you recently removed the president’s name from your campaign website in eight different places,” Burns said, “but you also didn’t mention him in your primary victory speech. You’ve broken with him on issues like the $5,000 dividends and AI regulation. It has raised some eyebrows as Republicans across the country have had to decide how closely to embrace the president in this moment. Is Trump a liability for your campaign?”
Donalds made clear that he was still appreciative of Trump’s endorsement, saying it was a “major” factor in his primary win. The changes to the website, he explained, were an effort to make his campaign better reflect issues faced by voters in Florida.
“I think if you’re talking about the issues in Florida today, the people of our state want to know that you have solutions for the things that they’re concerned about: insurance, the cost of living, etcetera, in our state” Donalds said. “They want to make sure you have solutions. When we made a change to the website, that had been planned for a month and a half. We really were saying internally as a campaign, we want to make sure that when voters — especially undecided voters — when they go to look to get information on our campaign, we want to make sure it’s focused on them. It’s about the issues that they care about, the things that they want to see happen. The president is still on our website. We made an adjustment. He’s at the top of the endorsement page, but it’s about focusing on the people of Florida.”
