PRIME MINISTER
KINGDOM OF SPAIN

POSITION

of the Bulgarian Social Democrats in Support of the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, on the Migration Situation in Ceuta

The Bulgarian Social Democrats express their full solidarity with the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, the Government of Spain, and the Spanish democratic institutions in addressing the unprecedented migratory pressure affecting the city of Ceuta, one of the external borders of the European Union.
The protection of national borders is both a sovereign responsibility of every Member State and a shared European commitment.
As an external border of the European Union, Spain’s border in Ceuta requires effective protection in full compliance with European and international law. Irregular mass border crossings create significant challenges for public security, social stability, and the safety and dignity of both local communities and migrants.
The recent developments underscore the complexity of the humanitarian, security, and administrative challenges faced by the Spanish authorities.
Social democracy is founded upon the principles of human dignity, solidarity, democracy, the rule of law, and respect for fundamental human rights.
These values require a balanced approach that combines compassion with responsibility. We unequivocally reject xenophobia, racism, discrimination, and hate speech, while also rejecting any attempt to legitimise irregular migration as an acceptable response to social or economic hardship.
We support the efforts of the Government of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to address the current situation through the effective protection of the European Union’s external borders, the fight against human trafficking and migrant smuggling networks, close cooperation with European and international partners, and the provision of humanitarian assistance to vulnerable persons in full accordance with international humanitarian and human rights law.
The Bulgarian Social Democrats firmly believe that migration is a shared European responsibility and cannot be effectively managed by individual Member States acting alone.
It requires a comprehensive and coordinated European approach based on solidarity among Member States, effective management of the Union’s external borders, fair and efficient asylum procedures, respect for international obligations, and strengthened partnerships with countries of origin and transit aimed at addressing the root causes of migration.
We stand firmly behind the efforts of the Government of Spain to safeguard the security of its citizens, uphold the rule of law, protect Europe’s common external borders, and preserve the humanitarian values that constitute the very foundation of European social democracy.
        Solidarity requires responsibility.
Humanity and security are complementary principles, while the rule of law remains the essential guarantee of freedom, justice, and human dignity for all.
