Balgarianovinite.com President Iliana Iotova will take part in the 10th gathering of the Kableshkov family in the town of Koprivshtitsa, the presidential press service said. The lineage includes renowned Bulgarian revolutionary Todor Kableshkov.
The event will begin at 11:00 a.m. in the courtyard of the Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God, where Todor Kableshkov is buried. The programme will then continue at the house museum of the Bulgarian revolutionary, located next to the church.
The year 2026 marks the 175th anniversary of Todor Kableshkov’s birth and the 150th anniversary of his death.
Todor Kableshkov (1851-1876) was a prominent figure in the Bulgarian national liberation movement. He was among the principal organizers and leaders of the April Uprising of 1876 in the Fourth Revolutionary District, centred in Panagyurishte. At the beginning of 1876, he became chairman of the revolutionary committee in Koprivshtitsa. Under his leadership, on May 2, 1876 (April 20, Old Style), the local committee proclaimed the uprising in Koprivshtitsa, giving the signal for the start of the April Uprising.
Kableshkov wrote and sent a message to Panagyurishte and other settlements, signing it with the blood of one of the slain Ottoman policemen. The document, later known as the Bloody Letter, called on Bulgarians across the country to rise in revolt. He headed the Military Council in Koprivshtitsa and, together with revolutionary Panayot Volov, led an insurgent detachment through the surrounding villages. Following the suppression of the uprising, Kableshkov retreated into the Balkan Mountains with a group of rebels. He was captured near Troyan and subjected to torture in prisons in Troyan, Lovech and Veliko Tarnovo. While being transferred to Plovdiv, he managed to steal a revolver at the Ottoman administrative headquarters in Gabrovo and took his own life with a gunshot to the head.
